COVER STORY: William G.
Matthews, Attorney at Law* Superior Legal Services From a Hometown Lawyer!
Bill established his firm focusing primarily on real estate closings, wills and probate of wills, and automobile accidents. What he enjoys most about his profession is meeting new people moving to the Athens area and helping them with their real estate closing needs. With new residents coming in with BRAC, the staff at William G. Mathews, Attorney at Law provides comprehensive assistance in all aspects of the acquisition of their homes. Not only do clients enjoy the attentiveness of Bill and his staff, they further enjoy the “kid-friendly” atmosphere that greets them at the front door. Another strong area of the practice is representing clients with automobile accident cases. Bill states, "When people are in an accident and are injured, they may feel overwhelmed by the extensive medical bills and in communicating with insurance companies. In order to feel at ease, people can rely on an attorney’s services to promptly settle their claims." Not only does Bill provide legal services, but he has also been a municipal judge in Ardmore for the last 10 years. "One of the most interesting things I do is preside as the municipal judge of Ardmore," he says. "This is a misdemeanor court and it offers a different perspective of the law when you are the person responsible for making the decision of someone’s guilt or innocence." It is Bill’s goal that his office maintains the utmost level of honesty and a high degree of character. He is a member of Lindsay Lane Baptist Church, and he and his family, wife Heather and children, William Jr., Caroline, and John David, make their home in Athens. A self proclaimed “family man”, Bill often coaches the various sports teams in which his three children participate. As a member of the law profession and resident of Athens, Bill is very involved in the community. He has been Past President of United Way, Past Board of Directors of Athens-Limestone County Chamber of Commerce, Past Treasurer of the Rotary Club, and Past President of Limestone County Bar Association. Contact Information: Building Dreams
The Athens affiliate initiated its very first “Women Build” in March 2007. It is known as the “Women Build” because it gives specifically women, a chance to come forward and build a home with a partner family. This allows women to empower themselves by putting their time, labor, and talents into something that is uniquely their own and all the while help a family build their life upward. Lowe’s of Athens provided several training sessions for the ladies, including classes on power tools, framing, interior trim, painting, and all other aspects of homebuilding procedures. Another major project in 2007 is the first neighborhood built entirely of Habitat for Humanity houses in Athens. Located right off of Brownsferry Street will be the “Hope” subdivision, which will be the home for nine Habitat for Humanity homes. The Corder, Plunk, Alexander and Shelley Law Firm of Athens donated the land to the HFHALC. In addition to these two projects, the Athens affiliate is also a part of the Apostle’s Build”, which will be a house built by groups of Churches assembled into 12 teams. This endeavor is spearheaded by Habitat Board member Lynn Robinson and is the first of its kind for the affiliate. Each team will represent one of the 12 disciples that will take on different areas of the construction process and provide the funding for the home. All churches and individuals are invited to take part in this wonderful ministry no matter what denomination. Contact Information:
"Our dealership subscribes to a set of values and procedures that are designed to be fair, honest, and straightforward," Self says. "It really levels the playing field between the dealer and the customer. We have eliminated that adversarial relationship … no games, no gimmicks, no come-ons." The sales staff is not paid on commission, which allows them to find the right car for the customer without it affecting their paycheck. Also, there are no DOC or prep fees, or any other fees that simply add up to additional dealer profit. At Shoals Suzuki, customers receive a written bid on their trade-in. This bid is the actual cash value of the trade-in not an "allowance". "We’ll write you a check for your vehicle even if you don’t trade with us, that way you know that you’re being dealt with in a straightforward way," he states. The dealership strongly believes customers need to be comfortable with their buying decision. They offer a full refund if a customer is not fully satisfied with their purchase within three days or 300 miles. "Simply bring it back for a full refund," Self says. "And if you had a trade-in, we’ll still have that for three days as well. It will be as if the deal never happened." Each Suzuki is a high-quality, valued-packed vehicle that comes with a lot of standard features and not at a premium price. Every new Suzuki comes with a fully transferable, zero deductible, 100,000-mile/or seven-year power train warranty. "What’s great about this warranty is it can be transferred from owner to owner—adding value when reselling or trading in," Self says. Other warranties that Shoals Suzuki provides include a 36,000-mile/or three-year bumper-to-bumper warranty that covers all components of the vehicle and 24,000-mile/or 24-month battery warranty—also with no deductible. One recent adoption success story is Porta John, a Sheppard mix that was found in a “Porta John”, and later adopted by the owner of that company. The Clinic did extensive surgery on him and money from the Kim Johnston Fund was used to cover a portion of the costs for the procedures. Jacob and Shelby Johnston started this fund in memory of their mother, Kim, with their two friends Mitchell Shelly and Cade Bolen with their birthday money. Contributions to the Kim Johnston Fund can be made through The Dog Pound. The Dog Pound has been making a difference in the Limestone County community for four years and for one year with the city of Athens. It has received great support from the Limestone County Commission and Chairman David Seibert and the city of Athens in helping control the unwanted pet population. “The County and City have been very supportive and offer spay/neuter programs for Medicaid and low-income people to have procedures done,” she states. The facility also receives individual donations from the community, such as from Mary Ann Faulkner. Mary Ann pays for the advertisements in The Athens New Courier and The Decatur Daily. “Every animal that’s been pictured in the ads gets adopted,” Carter explains. “Mary Ann has a tremendous love for animals and we appreciate her contributions to our cause.” Employees, including Priscilla Blenkinsopp, Matthew Hughes, Meagan Tribble, and other team members, work diligently to help animals in need. “Our staff has a true desire to help animals,” she comments. “We are dedicated to making a difference.” Contact Information:

FARE’s auctioning services in the Tennessee Valley has increased as more people are realizing that FARE can bring them top dollar for their property. “Land prices in our region have increased 50% in the last year and over 100% in the last five years,” he says. “Auctions always bring more money for undeveloped land because land is getting scarce.” According to Chief Financial Officer Betsye Fowler Spencer FARE is on track to conduct real estate auctions that exceed $23 million dollars in 2007. The facts speak for themselves: over 51 homes/commercial properties and 2,000 acres sold, which translates to over $20 million dollars earned for Fowler Auction clients. Today, 90% of FARE’s auctions are real estate, and FARE makes the sale of residential or commercial property stress free. “We handle every detail,” Betsye says. In addition to its outstanding services, Fowler Auction’s web site (www.fowlerauction.com) is user friendly with detailed information on upcoming auctions. As a result of Fowler Auction’s success, expansion among the auctioneer staff continues. Joining Mickey Fowler and veteran auctioneers Keith Mc Daniel, Joe Maddox, and Harold Fowler are Steve Butler, Daniel Culps, and Jay Lockridge. Culps may be a newly licensed auctioneer, but he has been with the company since he was 14—performing every kind of task, including coordinating outside marketing for FARE for the last two years. Butler, who’s licensed in Alabama and Tennessee, joins FARE with 11 years of experience. Lockridge recently joined FARE as an apprentice auctioneer and is quickly learning the ropes. Mickey comments, “I still get real excited doing an auction! But I also know that all of our auctioneers are highly qualified and will serve our clients in a professional and ethical manner—just as I have always done.” Customer satisfaction is a testament to FARE’s continued growth. “I have many repeat clients,” he explains, “and often they are different generations of the same family.” Client Gary Page states, “Fowler Auction has held two auctions for me over the past months, with a very good turn-out at both auctions. The quality of the buyers as well as the price received for the properties was more than we expected. I highly recommend Fowler Auction for selling property and assets.”

The Reserves handle a variety of duties, including working traffic control for parades, accidents and emergency situations; transporting prisoners; and ride and assist officers with their daily duties. “These reserves are a second pair of eyes for our officers,” Lieutenant James Kennedy says, who started as a Reserve in 1987. “The only function that they get paid for is working sporting events.” The Ardmore Police Reserves cover Limestone County, AL and Giles and Lincoln Counties in Tennessee. All Reserves are required to attend training. As a border town, they must take training in both Alabama and Tennessee. In Tennessee, new Reserves need 80 hours of training the first year and 40 hours each year after that. For Alabama, Reserves are required to take 12 hours of in-service each year. Some of the training the Reserves receive include firearms, child sexual abuse, search and seizure, traffic and felony stops, and search warrants, as well as Emergency Vehicle Operation certification for Tennessee. Kennedy, who has been promoted to Lieutenant, oversaw the Reserves program and recently turned over the reins to Sergeant Tracy Luna. “Our Reserves are great guys,” Kennedy says. “People don’t realize how important they are. They mean a lot to me, this department, and Chief Oliver. We support the Reserves 100 percent.”

At Hospice of Limestone County, focus is the patient and family, as a unit, with the goal being to maintain dignity, comfort, and peace for those facing end-of-life care. “We struggle to understand and accept that there are some things we simply cannot do—such as removing the pain of grief and loss,” says Director Pat King. “However, we attempt to focus our energy on what we can do—reduce physical pain, control symptoms, provide spiritual counseling, lend emotional support, and provide respite relief for caregivers.” Hospice of Limestone County works closely with the patient’s primary physician and coordinates a team of medical professionals and trained volunteers to assist patients in their homes. The hospice team typically includes a physician, chaplain, counselor, pharmacist, home health aide, nurse, social worker, nutritionist, volunteers, and respite worker. The team meets regularly to discuss ways to assist patients and families. A plan of care is developed and continually adjusted as needs change. Professionally trained counselors offer families bereavement care for at least 13 months following the death of a patient. Some of the numerous services Hospice of Limestone County offers are The Loft, an “uplifting” program designed for bereavement and Camp Hope. It is a non-profit community resource with the goal of providing comfort, support, and encouragement to those on their journey through the unknown territory of grief and loss. Hospice of Limestone County community resources include adult support groups, children and youth support groups, crisis response, grief in the workplace, memorial services, education, and area resources. These services provided by professionals certified in crisis intervention and grief counseling, are available to all hospice and non-hospice families in living in Limestone County. Camp Hope, started in 1996, is a one-day camp for Limestone County kids ages five to 13 who are coping with the death of a loved one. Each camper is paired with a volunteer buddy for the entire day. Campers and buddies hang out, do arts and crafts, play games, fish, and most importantly, talk, listen, and share feelings with one another. Buddies, often older teens, are trained in the impact of grief/loss of a loved one. Hospice of Limestone County is Medicaid and Medicare certified, as well as approved for private insurance coverage. However, it should be noted all services are not reimbursed, and Hospice of Limestone County provides services to qualified patients without regard to income or payment source. As mentioned previously, bereavement and community education services are also available to non-hospice families, making your donations, volunteer time and talents very valuable and appreciated by the staff, governing board and friends of your local hospice.

The office’s goal is to make patients feel welcome and comfortable. Each staff member listens to patients and their concerns. Dr. Walker sees between 25-30 patients a day and goes over details with patients to make sure they receive proper care. “I truly enjoy getting to know my patients…from where they went fishing that day to what they have planted in their gardens,” he states. “I want our patients to feel comfortable here.” Dr. Walker graduated from the University of Maryland in Pre-Med and then from George Washington University Medical School. Dr. Walker joined the United States Army in 1980 and served until 1991. While in the Army, he did his internship and residency at Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX. Dr. Walker and Sharon then moved to the Tennessee Valley and he began working at Redstone Arsenal as the Chief of Medicine at Fox Community Hospital. After leaving the Army, Dr. Walker and Sharon decided they wanted to stay in a small-town atmosphere and planted their roots in Limestone County. “We really enjoy this community, so it was an easy decision for us to continue serving the area with our medical services,” Sharon comments. Sharon, originally from Provincetown, MA, always had a love for the medical profession. She currently is the administrator of the practice and is a nurse in the office. She also holds a paramedic license. Sharon chose to go into the medicinal profession as her grandparents and father were involved in it. At the age of 14, Sharon rode with the ambulance team with her grandfather. Her father was a member of the Provincetown Police Department and the Fire and Rescue Squad. “I grew up seeing how my family gave back to the community and I also wanted to do the same,” Sharon says. “The best part of the job is being able to help people and share my knowledge of medicine.” Dr. Walker and Sharon are heavily involved in the community. Dr. Walker is on the ICU and Pharmacy committees at the Athens Limestone Hospital, as well as the Chief of ICU. Sharon helps by sponsoring the Limestone County Sheriff’s Rodeo Queen luncheon, is a member of the Ladies Civitan Club, will be on the Gala committee for the Athens-Limestone Hospital Foundation, and was the Secretary on the original board for the Athens Boys and Girls Club. Something unique about Sharon is that she is a Certified Olympic Bowling Instructor and also a semi-professional player. Limestone Internal Medicine truly loves being a part of the Athens community. The practice is accepting patients regularly and accepts a variety of insurances.

"For example, if the cars are towed away to the crusher before the pictures are taken, your entire case could be lost. We’ll go by the junkyard and also ask that the vehicles be held or we will purchase the vehicles to preserve them. All of this at no cost to you unless we collect." “Mimi and I wanted to bring certified therapy animals to facilities where dogs/cats had not been previously allowed,” Connie states. “People miss their animals when hospitalized or in another facility where pets are not allowed. Studies have shown that the presence of an animal lowers blood pressure, heart rate, normalizes the environment, decreases depression, and patients request less pain medication for hours after the therapy animal visits.” Therapy Partners animals and trainers receive training to make sure they are a good fit for the program. With the program, there are three levels of obedience training that’s needed and each animal must be socialized by visiting and meeting people and at classes. The animals are given a temperament test to evaluate their comfort in different situations. After passing, there is a 6-month training course with an evaluation from the Delta Society® Pet Partners® association with various role-playing situations and observations. Connie’s dog Katie, a 12-year-old Golden Retriever, is a therapy dog and visits places like HOPE Place, an abused women’s shelter. “Katie has a ‘Golden’ personality,” she explains. “She smiles and wags her tail so hard her whole backend wags. I love to share Katie's unconditional love with people. She doesn't care how much money someone has, what their hair looks like, or what their present situation is. She is just happy to see them and spread love and kisses to them at a time when they need that love.” In recognition of Connie and Katie’s achievements, the pair recently won the Delta Society® Pet Partners® Pet Partner of the Year for 2007. Jamie has been a fixture in local television for 34 years in North Alabama and Gloria for the last nine. Jamie started in Huntsville television E-TV in 1974 then moved to WAAY-TV in 1975. He worked at WAAY-TV for 17 years in a variety of positions and started the WAAY Too Early show, then later went on to start Cooper & Company and in 1999 Gloria and Jamie moved to WHDF-TV in Florence while continuing on WAFF-TV in Huntsville. While many of us remember Jamie as the “Country Rover” from the late 1970s to early 1990s, he featured local people and places in the Tennessee Valley and almost daily, people continue to ask Jamie about those segments. Jamie now focuses on local news (ZNN) and events at ZTV-11. Programming includes Cooper & Company, health, home improvement, and area church programs. Cooper & Company airs live Tuesday through Friday at 6 am and replays nightly at 9 pm. “The Country Rover Classics” air Mondays at 6 am and 9 pm. This memorable show highlights what ZTV-11 is all about … local people and places that are a part of our community. What has made the station so successful is its local flavor of entertainment, events, and area sports. ZTV-11 offers affordable advertising opportunities with more airtime available than other area TV stations to local businesses and churches in Limestone, Madison, and Morgan counties. “ZTV-11 is local and that’s what we’re all about,” Jamie says. “Our success at ZTV-11 is due in a large part to our staff and friends that assist in handling the day-to-day operations,” Gloria says. “We couldn’t pull this off without them and we’re blessed that we all have the same goal and that is to stay local.” ZTV-11’s future plan is to be added to more cable systems and satellite providers. “Be aware that if you’re thinking about switching to Comcast, DirecTV, and Dish Network, ZTV-11 is not available. Request ZTV-11 every chance you get, it may take several requests, but there isn’t a more ‘local’ channel in the Tennessee Valley than ZTV-11 … period,” Jamie says. “With the help of viewers we’ll be successful in getting ZTV-11 on all cable systems and satellite networks.” Contact Information:Jamie Cooper Television 256.603.4848 ztv@jamiecooper.com www.jamiecooper.com
