COVER STORY: 25th Limestone Sheriff's Rodeo*

Sheriff Mike Blakely and his staff are proud to be bringing its annual Limestone Sheriff’s Rodeo to Athens for its 25th year! When Blakely first was elected in 1982 he had no idea how successful the rodeo would be in helping his staff and the Limestone County community.

"Once I assumed office, I noticed the patrol cars were worn out," Blakely recalls. "After the Fraternal Order of Police turned down the rodeo promoter at their meeting as a fundraising event, I knew I had found the answer to us raising money to purchase much-needed vehicles and equipment."

Blakely, a fourth generation resident of Limestone County, has a passion for horses and grew up attending and participating in the rodeo that was held at the Veterans Fairgrounds until the late 1960s. As a unique and growing community, Blakely felt the rodeo would be successful in Athens.

With the tremendous support from local businesses and the great base of rodeo fans in the community, the first rodeo was held on Highway 31 South on property owned by Herman and Nancy Swanner that had a small arena for the participants. "That first year we raised $9,000 and was able to buy a ‘demo’ Plymouth patrol car at no cost to the taxpayers," he explains.

After the first two years of the rodeo being produced by Mid-South Rodeo Company out of west Tennessee, Blakely met with Preston Fowlkes II who owned Lone Star Rodeo and hired him as stock contractor and producer for the event. Fowlkes’ father did the original rodeo in Athens that Blakely attended while a boy and the company is now in its 58th year as a stock contractor and rodeo producer.

For the fifth rodeo, Blakely spoke with the Athens Jaycees about using its location on Elm Street and Highway 99. In exchange for using the fairgrounds, the Sheriff’s Office provided in kind services, such as a concession stand. In 1988, the Sheriff’s Office was still borrowing bleachers from the Tanner Quarterback Club and Blakely promised the crowd to provide permanent seating. To raise funds for the bleachers, Blakely held a "Hog Head" Stew luncheon at the jail where he sold 10-year contracts to local businesses to advertise their services on the bleachers. Then in 1998, the Sheriff’s Office bought the property from the Jaycees.

As the largest outdoor rodeo east of the Mississippi, the rodeo draws nationally recognized competitors and was sanctioned by the International Professional Rodeo Association (IPRA) and the Professional Cowboy Association (PCA). "The last two years, we’ve been selected by the PCA as the best rodeo in the association," Blakely states.

This 25th edition will be held May 17-19 and festivities such as the parade, street dance, and special needs rodeo will be held prior to the event. The affordably priced rodeo also features the Rodeo Queen and Cowboy Contest, Barbecue Cook Off, live country music, and wholesome, family entertainment with more than 380 rodeo contestants.

In addition to the outstanding community and business support, Blakely contributes the rodeo’s success to the help he has received from all the staff members, including Lieutenant Randy Bates and Lieutenant Allen Craig. "Over the last 25 years the rodeo has been good to us," he says. "These funds are earmarked toward the furtherance of law enforcement, such as supporting our helicopter operation; training costs for staff; and purchasing radio equipment, patrol vehicles, and investigation equipment. It allows us to better serve the citizens of Limestone County, making it a safer place to live and work."

For more information, contact the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office at 101 W. Elm Street in Athens, 256.232-0111, or www.limestonesheriffrodeo.com.

Limestone Sheriff's Special Needs Rodeo*

Since 2002, The Limestone Sheriff’s Special Needs Rodeo has been providing physically and mentally challenged participants with a special day of fun and activities. In conjunction with the annual Limestone Sheriff’s Rodeo, the event offers a variety of rodeo activities, such as horseback rides, buggy rides, stationary bull riding, simulated calf roping, NASCAR Horse Racing with sticks, the Americ train ride, and old- fashioned hay rides.

The Special Needs Rodeo is coordinated by members of the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office, numerous rodeo committee workers, volunteers from the community, as well as professionals who specialize in caring for the mentally and physically challenged. The event was started after "Miss Limestone Rodeo Queen", Charis Williams Ritter, visited the special needs class at one of our local high schools during her reign to promote the upcoming rodeo," Coordinator Dawn Blakely explains. "She launched the idea after learning first-hand that some of these children would never have the opportunity to experience many of the things that we take for granted each day. The Rodeo Queen Committee and Sheriff Mike Blakely immediately put plans in motion to host what has become one of the richest traditions of the Limestone Sheriff’s Rodeo."

Blakely contributes its success to the outstanding support from the community. "The community has embraced this event and the generosity has been overwhelming," she states. "They have given their time, effort, and money, and we could not be successful without their assistance." Some of the many sponsors include ZTV-11, Turner Beverage of Huntsville, Stateline Sporting Goods, 4-Men & A Grill, Southern Family Market, Pepsi Cola of Decatur, Purity Dairy, and Preston’s Western & Outdoor.

This year’s Limestone Sheriff’s Special Needs Rodeo will be held May 18 from 10am to 1pm at the Limestone Sheriff’s Rodeo Arena and admission is free of charge. For more information, contact 256.232.0111 or visit www.limestonesheriffrodeo.com.

Owner Laurie Cannon has more than 25 years of experience in the business and provides a full line of services, such as catering, flowers, and decorations, as well as wedding coordinator services.

While an event is taking place at Valley Event Center, all areas are taken care of for the client. "We try to make this a day to remember for the bride or any of our clients," she states. "Our thoughts are that the bride is queen for the day."

Bride Candice Chandler Rogers states, "Laurie provided the flowers, decorations for ceremony and church, and the reception was held at Valley Event Center. This was truly one of the best days of my life. Everything went so smoothly and I credit Laurie for that. From our first meeting to the wedding itself, she made it all happen. Everything I envisioned, she put into reality."

Mother of the bride, Sherry Robison, says, "Valley Event Center provided decorations for the church, the spot for the reception, and coordinated with our caterer for my daughter Alison’s wedding. Laurie was always available when Alison came into town from Birmingham and put all that my daughter wanted into the event. She took the stress out of it for us. After Alison’s wedding, Alison sent me a note and thanked me for giving her the wedding that she always wanted. I’ll take the compliment, but I know who really did all the work, and that was Laurie."

Pat Smith, mother of the bride, comments, "Laurie provided catering, flowers and decorations for the church, and the reception was at Valley Event Center. Laurie made our life easier for my daughter Stephanie’s wedding. Stephanie had collected pictures and clippings from magazines to create a wedding notebook and Laurie did a fabulous job getting everything that Stephanie wanted. Everyone raved about the shrimp, various dips, chicken fingers, ham rolls, and fruits and vegetables, as well as the beautiful flowers."

Inside Valley Event Center is a banquet room, two stages for a DJ or a live band, a dance floor, and an area with a large screen TV. The facility is also equipped with Internet access and Cable TV for any televised sporting event.

"We wanted to offer the community a place to come and listen and dance to incredible music right here in Athens," Laurie states. These events are $15 per person and heavy hors d’oeuvres are provided.

Laurie contributes her success to the support she receives from her husband Joe. "Joe has given me the encouragement and support to get started and without him I wouldn’t be able to do what I do," She says.

William G. Matthews*

William G. Mathews, Attorney at Law provides the Athens and surrounding communities with top-quality services and representation for a variety of legal needs. Bill, a hometown native, enjoys living and working in Athens. Growing up in Athens, he attended Julian Newman Elementary School, Athens Middle School, and Athens High School. Bill then earned his bachelor’s degree from Auburn University and his law degree from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University. After receiving his degree, Bill went to work for Sherrill, Batts, and Mathews until opening his own practice in 1999.

Bill and his staff provide real estate loan closings, wills and probate of wills, and automobile accidents services. With new residents coming in with BRAC, Bill offers top-notch assistance in all aspects of a closing, such as pre-closing, the actual event, and post closing with thorough examination of all details. "Many people don’t realize you can call for a free consultation and they may be afraid to talk to a lawyer because of the expenses involved," Bill says. "With estate planning, clients may have to pay minimal fees up front, but working with an attorney can save them money in the long run."

Another strong area of the practice is representing clients with automobile accident cases. "When people are in an accident and are injured, insurance companies are reluctant to make a reasonable settlement," he states. "Insurance companies have trained people with the goal of paying nothing or as little as possible to resolve claims."

He continues, "Many people trust insurance companies in auto accident claims and don’t realized they are talking to someone that doesn’t represent their best interests. People have to hire attorney to get the insurance company to move and that’s where our services come in."

Not only does Bill provide legal services, but he has also been a municipal judge in Ardmore for the last 10 years. "One of the most interesting things I do is preside as the municipal judge of Ardmore," he says. "This is a misdemeanor court and it offers a different perspective of the law when you are the person responsible for making the decision of someone’s guilt or innocence."

As a member of the law profession and resident of Athens, Bill is very involved in the community. He has been Past President of United Way, Past Board of Directors of Athens-Limestone County Chamber of Commerce, Past Treasurer of the Rotary Club, and Past President of Limestone County Bar Association.

As a Christian-based attorney, Bill holds himself to the utmost level of honesty and a high degree of character. He is a member of Lindsay Lane Baptist Church and he and his family, wife Heather and children, William Jr., Caroline, and John David, make their home in Athens.

Valley Imaging Center*
Better Care for Patients Because of it's Dedicated Staff

Valley Imaging Center focuses on better care for patients and does so with a caring and dedicated staff. The team of professionals provides north Alabama and southern Tennessee with top-notch imaging services for open MRI, CT, ultrasounds, Mammo, and x-rays. Dr. Joe Cannon, a Board Certified Radiologist and graduate of The University of Alabama-Birmingham School of Medicine, opened Valley Imaging nine years ago after seeing a need for more localized and professional services in the Athens area.

Valley Imaging strives to provide patients with timely service in a friendly environment. "There is no actual ‘waiting room’," Chief Operating Officer Bob Chamber says. "We have an area to complete the required documentation and we work hard to provide patients with 100% on-time appointments. Our goal is to have patients enter and leave with a positive pleasant experience."

The technical staff at Valley Imaging consists of MRI technologists, CT technologists, mammographers, and ultrasound personnel that are all certified in their respective fields. "What sets us apart is that we have a full-time radiologist on site," Chambers says. "We also continue to provide high-quality imaging and offer continuing education courses for our staff."

Chambers adds, "The staff members are all ‘A players’ and everyone is concerned about the patient care and making Valley Imaging the ‘Gold’ standard in service."

In addition to Dr. Cannon and Chambers, there are 11 more team members that all resonate the same belief of providing patients with a friendly and comfortable atmosphere. Mickey Carter, who has been with Valley Imaging for 15 years and works in the accounts receivables department, handles a variety of tasks, such as checking patients in, collections, and follows-up with insurance companies. "I really enjoy working here and we have a great team," Carter states. "I love helping patients resolve their insurance needs."

Kelly Savoy is a MRI Technologist and has been on staff for 10 years. Savoy focuses on making patients feel at ease by explaining the procedures and answering all questions before and after the scan. "I love everything about this job," Savoy says. "I enjoy helping people and making them feel comfortable with the procedures they are here to have."

Alisha Cannon, a Registered Mammography Technologist, has been with Valley Imaging for a year. Her responsibilities include handling the Mammograms, X-Rays, and MRIs. "The reason I went into the medical field was to interact with patients and make a difference," Cannon states. "Everyone on the staff gets along and we all care about our patients…its like one big family!"

Along with the dedicated staff, Valley Imaging also provides patients with state-of-the-art equipment for all procedures, such as CT, Mammography, CR, Nuclear Medicine, PICC lines, biopsies, arthrograms, and foreign body removal.

"Any facility can have the technology, but without a dedicated staff, they can’t provide great service," Chambers says. "This is what sets us apart."

For a team of caring professionals, contact Valley Imaging at 22281 U.S. Highway 72, Suites B & C and at 256.233.2158. Office hours are 7:30am to 6:30pm Monday-Thursday, 7:30am to 4:30pm on Fridays, and 8am to 1pm on Saturdays.

Reliance Bank*
Honors Local Third-Grade Picasso

Local artist Atlee Hanks has been named the winner of Reliance Bank’s YES Savings Account Coloring Contest. Atlee is a student in Mrs. Kim Bottcher’s third-grade class at Julian Newman Elementary School, which is Reliance Bank’s Partner in Education.

The Reliance judges first noticed Atlee’s use of multiple media, including pencil, pen, marker, and crayon. But they were won over by her charming community spirit. Her masterpiece is captioned, "If I had a lot of money, I would give it to all the kids in charity."

In Atlee’s honor, each third-grade homeroom class at Julian Newman Elementary School will receive a cupcake party and a basket of school supplies. Reliance Bank has asked Atlee to design the artwork for a series of ads promoting the YES Savings Account. Her work will appear on a TV commercial, in newspaper ads, and on a billboard. She will also receive a YES account, complete with a $50 deposit. Atlee’s creation will be on display at the new Reliance Bank branch on Highway 72 in May.

Atlee’s work is perfect for the YES Savings Account, because it is designed exclusively for children ages two to 15. When establishing a YES account, children simply open the account, deposit their money, and pick a YES prize from the treasure chest. In addition, the children can collect stamps on a YES card and with 15 stamps they receive a $5 reward. During their birthday month, kids get double stamps. "No other bank in the Athens area promotes healthy, money-saving habits for kids," President and Chief Executive Officer David Kinchler says.

As part of the community, Reliance Bank gives back to its schools, businesses, and everyday heroes, such as Atlee. To sign up for a YES account, visit any of the Reliance locations–North Jefferson, East Market, or Highway 72.

Athens-Limestone Hospital*

Cary Payne knows the heart of a community hospital is its people—the local residents who rely on Athens-Limestone Hospital (ALH) for healthcare, as well as the dedicated physicians and staff that serve them. And Payne, recently named chief executive officer of ALH, wants to continue providing the best healthcare to the people of a growing community by developing enhanced, cutting-edge services. "We’re very excited about the future of Athens and Limestone County," Payne says.

The hospital’s services are being extended to the east. "The 19,000-square-foot Athens-Limestone Diagnostic Center, to include Medical East urgent care, will offer the most modern all-digital imaging technology," Payne says. Diagnostic tools will include MRI, mammography, X-ray, ultrasound and CT scan. "The only place you’ll find equal imaging services is Huntsville Hospital," says Payne. This site on Lindsay Lane and U.S. Highway 72 has 40 acres for future development, including medical office buildings, an ambulatory surgery center, and an alternate emergency/disaster medical site.

Payne’s military background helped prepare him to take the reigns of ALH. He began his military career in 1975 and became an Army Medical Service Corps officer. He served as an administrator at the Pentagon and several military hospitals. Payne joined ALH in 1996 as assistant administrator, eventually becoming COO and now CEO. His wife, Lisa Carter Payne, an Elkmont native, works at Athens State University. He has two children, daughter Adrian and son Ryan.

With Board guidance, Payne plans to take the hospital into the future with a possible affiliation with Huntsville Hospital. "Two community hospitals with the same mission working together to care for patients in Northern Alabama, I see it as a very positive step. Group purchasing, better bond ratings and economies of scale will greatly improve ALH’s ability to grow into the future," says Payne.

As CEO, Payne inherited an ongoing project-expanded ED services at the hospital campus on Market Street. The first phase of the expansion, for which there is a $1 million fundraising campaign, should be completed in about 12 months. In addition to more space and number of beds, a nurse practitioner will be hired to supplement physicians who are already working in the Emergency Room.

Payne’s vision for ALH includes providing wellness services for residents. He is working with the city of Athens and Athens State University to build a park on the eastern side of town. "It will be a permanent green space between Athens-Limestone Medical Village and communities to the south, on Lindsay Lane," Payne says. "Phase I will include a half-mile arbor and walking trail, picnic tables, a pavilion and restroom facilities." Funding will be through grants and donations

"With the continued leadership of the Board and dedication of an outstanding group of employees, we will continue to support our physicians and provide quality healthcare to our patients and their families while remaining an integral part of this wonderful community," he says.

Shoals Suzuki*

Shoals Suzuki, a part of the Driving 2000 family of dealerships, can level the car buying playing field with its unique Driving 2000 Buying Process. President Mike Self opened the dealership in January 2006 to provide the Shoals area with an outstanding place to buy a Suzuki with a company that goes the extra mile for its customers.

"Our dealership subscribes to a set of values and procedures that are designed to be fair, honest, and straightforward," Self says. "It really levels the playing field between the dealer and the customer. We have eliminated that adversarial relationship … no games, no gimmicks, no come-ons."

The sales staff is not paid on commission, which allows them to find the right car for the customer without it affecting their paycheck. Also, there are no DOC or prep fees, or any other fees that simply add up to additional dealer profit.

At Shoals Suzuki, customers receive a written bid on their trade-in. This bid is the actual cash value of the trade-in not an "allowance". "We’ll write you a check for your vehicle even if you don’t trade with us, that way you know that you’re being dealt with in a straightforward way," he states.

The dealership strongly believes customers need to be comfortable with their buying decision. They offer a full refund if a customer is not fully satisfied with their purchase within three days or 300 miles. "Simply bring it back for a full refund," Self says. "And if you had a trade-in, we’ll still have that for three days as well. It will be as if the deal never happened."

Each Suzuki is a high-quality, valued-packed vehicle that comes with a lot of standard features and not at a premium price. Every new Suzuki comes with a fully transferable, zero deductible, 100,000-mile/or seven-year power train warranty. "What’s great about this warranty is it can be transferred from owner to owner—adding value when reselling or trading in," Self says. Other warranties that Shoals Suzuki provides include a 36,000-mile/or three-year bumper-to-bumper warranty that covers all components of the vehicle and 24,000-mile/or 24-month battery warranty—also with no deductible.

In addition to these top-notch warranties, a courtesy rental vehicle is available if your car needs to be kept overnight, for up to five days. Every new Suzuki is covered by a 365 days/24-hours roadside assistance program to fix a flat, unlock the vehicle, or put gas in the car.

"It feels good to be able to sell cars and SUVs in such a way that you’re never ashamed to come face to face with a customer because our Driving 2000 Buying Process truly is the most honest and straightforward way to buy a car," he states.

Shoals Suzuki, one of the top three Suzuki dealers in America, is located at 4100 Jackson Highway in Sheffield and are open 8am to 6pm, Monday - Saturday and closed on Sundays. For more information, contact 256.248.2100 or e-mail mself@shoalssuzuki.com, or visit www.driving2000.com.

ZTV-11*
Local and Lovin' It!

Since January 2003, ZTV in Athens, known as ZTV-11, has been local and lovin’ it, with shows that focus on local people and places in the Tennessee Valley. Jamie and Gloria Cooper own and operate ZTV-11, as well as host and produce the morning show, Cooper & Company. While Jamie focuses on the morning show and marketing, Gloria handles daily operations.

Jamie has been a fixture in local television for 33 years in North Alabama and Gloria for the last eight. Jamie started in Huntsville television E-TV in 1974 then moved to WAAY-TV in 1975. He worked at WAAY-TV for 17 years in a variety of positions and started the WAAY Too Early show, then later went on to start Cooper & Company and in 1999 Gloria and Jamie moved to WHDF-TV in Florence while continuing on WAFF-TV in Huntsville.

While many of us remember Jamie as the "Country Rover" from the late 1970s to early 1990s, he featured local people and places in the Tennessee Valley and almost daily, people continue to ask Jamie about those segments. Jamie now focuses on
local news (ZNN) and events at ZTV-11. Programming includes Cooper & Company, health, home improvement, and area church programs. Cooper & Company airs live Tuesday through Friday at 6 am and replays nightly at 9 pm. "The Country Rover Classics" air Mondays at 6 am and 9 pm. This memorable show highlights what ZTV-11 is all about … local people and places that are a part of our community.

What has made the station so successful is its local flavor of entertainment, events, and area sports. ZTV-11 offers affordable advertising opportunities with more airtime available than other area TV stations to local businesses and churches in Limestone, Madison, and Morgan counties. "ZTV-11 is local and that’s what we’re all about," Jamie says.

"Our success at ZTV-11 is due in a large part to our staff and friends that assist in handling the day-to-day operations," Gloria says. "We couldn’t pull this off without them and we’re blessed that we all have the same goal and that is to stay local."

ZTV-11’s future plan is to be added to more cable systems and satellite providers. "Be aware that if you’re thinking about switching to Comcast, DirecTV, and Dish Network, ZTV-11 is not available. Request ZTV-11 every chance you get, it may take several requests, but there isn’t a more ‘local’ channel in the Tennessee Valley than ZTV-11 … period," Jamie says. "With the help of viewers we’ll be successful in getting ZTV-11 on all cable systems and satellite networks."

For more information on how to either be a guest on Cooper & Company or advertise with the station, please contact Gloria at 256.603.4848, or e-mail: gloria@jamiecooper.com, ztv@jamiecooper.com, or online at www.jamiecooper.com.

  • "What a pleasure it has been to advertise on this special program for over 10 years now. Not only did I reach more people on the Cooper & Company Show than any other form of advertising we used, it literally changed the way we do business." Your friends in health, Roy & Gwen Williams, NEWtritional Healthcare

  • "Years ago when we started advertising with Cooper & Company we saw a 20-percent increase in business the first year! We have continued advertising and so have the increases. We appreciate what Jamie and Gloria have done to help us be successful Thanks again!" Bill & Richard Keyes, Dixie Auto Parts

  • "Every since I’ve been involved with Cooper & Company, and my ‘Ask Ann’ segment, I’m recognized everywhere! I appreciate Jamie and Gloria for all that they have done for me. I never dreamed I would be on TV. I love the show and meeting different people and having all the fun in the world." Ann Shoulders, "Ask Ann"

  • "Advertising with Jamie and Gloria Cooper has been a great success for our company. We have sold several pieces of equipment due to their wonderful commercial ads they have done for us. Jamie and Gloria have a bright enthusiasm that makes anyone want to work with them." Phillip Wright, Wright’s Kubota

  • "We all enjoy claiming ZTV-11 as our own, but we continue to watch Jamie cover the entire Tennessee Valley with wholesome and entertaining programming. I am constantly amazed by the number of people that continually remark about events they watched during that morning’s Cooper & Company show." Sheriff Mike Blakely

The Sports Buzz with Harold Bugg*

The buzz around the Tennessee Valley community can be heard about ZTV-11’s new sports show, "The Sports Buzz with Harold Bugg". Owner Jamie Cooper thought a show about Southeastern Conference sports, in particular The University of Alabama, Auburn University, and The University of Tennessee football programs, was needed. Cooper met with one of the Tennessee Valley’s well-known sports broadcaster, Harold Bugg, and is now putting his vision into reality. "The show will fill the need that isn’t being met by the national sports shows or local sports casts," Jamie says. "People in the area want and need their fix of SEC football and we’re here to provide it."

The show airs Monday through Friday at 7pm and replayed at 11pm with hosts Harold Bugg and Brett Beaird at the helm. It will cover a variety of local and college sports topics and host many sports figures and celebrities, such as Eli Gold and Rob Bramlett.

Harold has extensive knowledge in covering sports throughout the state, as well as in the Tennessee Valley, in both television and radio. As a self-proclaimed "sports nut", Harold has always had a passion for sports. "My father told me to find where your passion is and you’ll never work a day in your life," he states. "My passion is sports."

Harold brings a wealth of experience to the show. "Harold Bugg is one of the most talented and finest sports broadcasters I am ever known or watched," The Birmingham News Columnist and Radio Broadcaster Paul Finebaum says. "Rarely have I seen a talent who has not only been able to captivate an audience, but to be able to garner such fierce loyalty from them. He is a rare breed in the business."

Preston's Western Wear*

Preston’s Western Wear, a Texas-sized store in Athens, is known to have customers smiling, laughing, and tapping their boots to the music while shopping. The husband-and-wife team of Pat and Debbie Preston own Preston’s and continues building on its foundation of customer service. "Having been a part of the Preston family for more than 20 years, Preston’s demonstrates excellence when it comes to customer service," Debbie explains. "We not only offer more than 10,000-square feet of merchandise, but also friendly employees that treat customers like people they’ve known for years. This merely echoes the foundation on which Preston’s was built."

Pat and his father, Doug, originally started Preston’s in May of 1985 as a farm supply store. "The Preston family has always been in business for themselves as they were farmers before establishing the store," she states.

The demand for farming supplies has decreased over the years; motivating Preston’s to change its focus to western attire. "The selection is what makes Preston’s unique—you can find things at Preston’s you won’t see in other stores," Debbie says. "Preston’s makes it a priority to offer a good selection, including boots, hats, and clothing that come in infant, children, women, and men sizes."

The extensive boot selection features boots from Justin, Red Wing, Ariat, Boulet, Dan Post, Lucchese, Tony Lama, Roper, and Rocky, others. In addition, the store offers exotic boots, such as ostrich, snake, lizard, and elephant skins. "Unlike most boot stores, the boot department is set up like a retail shoe department where staff members help customers by waiting on them," she explains. "This personalizes customers’ purchases and helps them find the right fit."

The personalized service continues with Preston’s large selection of hats. "George Strait has popularized Resistol hats and customers come in requesting George’s hat, Alan Jackson’s Silverbelly Stetson, or Toby Keith’s fashionable Scala hat, which are all at the store," Debbie comments. The hat department offers Serratelli, Bailey, Charlie-1-Horse, Shady Brady, and more. Furthermore, custom-made selections are available, as well as cleaning and shaping services.

Preston’s also carries Carhartt, Wrangler, Cinch, Cruel Girl, and Lucky clothing items and accessories to go with its clothing. Accessories such as custom jewelry and belt buckles can be ordered, as well as the Brighton, Barse, Montana Silversmiths, and Elk Creek items on display. Leather items—luggage, briefcases, portfolios, wallets, and purses—are available. Home décor items include furniture, lamps, pictures, picture frames, unusual gift items, statues, water fountains, vases, and flower arrangements.

Preston’s success can be contributed to its support from the community and it proudly gives back to many local events and charities, donates to Hospice events, and sponsors blood drives. Preston’s is a sponsor of the Limestone Sheriff’s Rodeo and Special Needs Rodeo, and other rodeos in Cullman, Morgan, and Lauderdale counties.

For Texas-sized selections in boots, hats, clothing, accessories, and home décor items, contact Preston’s Western Wear at 256.233.0813 or at prestonday@aol.com. The store is located at 1703 Highway 72 East and is open Monday through Saturday, 10am to 6pm. Call for holiday hours.

American Cancer Society*

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life is just one of many ways to support the fight against cancer during a fun-filled event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs. Beth Tutwiler, Income Development Representative covering Limestone and Morgan Counties for The American Cancer Society, is pleased to announce that this year’s Relay For Life for Limestone County event will take place at the Athens Sportsplex on May 4-5 from 7pm to 7am.

The first Relay For Life was established in May 1985, when Dr. Gordy Klatt decided to raise money for fighting cancer by circling a track in 24 hours. Throughout the night, friends and family paid $25 to run or walk 30 minutes with him. He raised $27,000 to fight cancer.

What sets Relay For Life apart from other events is that it is the largest community fundraiser in the world and participants can form teams or walk individually to support the cause. "People get involved because cancer touches everyone," she says. "You would be hard pressed to not find someone that hasn’t been affected by cancer one way or another," Tutwiler says. "What’s truly inspiring is seeing how the dollars raised make a difference."

Relay For Life is just one way to help fight cancer and many of its participants, such as Tony Gooch, are living with and fighting cancer every day. Tony’s story is inspirational as he continues on his long journey with cancer. Tony found out he had cancer after hurting his back at work. In the summer of 1999 when he sought treatment for his back, he was diagnosed with cancer of the spine, which eventually turned out to be a misdiagnosis. He then went to Dr. Mahn Dang in Huntsville where he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and began a series of treatments that were successful.

Not long after in the spring of 2001, Tony was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer. He went to Vanderbilt Hospital and began the process for a stem cell transplant. In January 2002, Tony had his stem cell transplant and it was a success. Each year Tony is checked and his bone marrow is cancer free. In late 2005, Tony was again diagnosed with Lymphoma in his lungs and more tumors where discovered in late 2006. Now with multiple tumors and breast cancer, Tony is not only battling cancer, but kidney failure as well. Even in the midst of his battle, Tony focuses on the positives and volunteers as a security man and videographer/editor at ZTV-11 in Athens, which will sponsor a team for this year’s Relay For Life event.

Tony has participated in the event since 2000 and he’s also involved in a cancer support group in Athens that meets the 2nd Tuesday of the month. "I encourage people to get checked out, not be fearful, and to do what’s best for them and their family," Gooch says.

He continues, "If cancer hasn’t affected your life, it will. Cancer can be a blessing … it changes your life dramatically. It changed my life for the good and has taught me to speak out, help others, and have a positive outlook on everything."
